Did you once think the Christian life was a quiet and beautiful journey to heaven? If so, it probably didn’t take you long to realize you were looking through rose-colored glasses. You’re in a war, my friend. And your adversary, the devil, is like a roaring lion seeking to devour you. How do you win the war? Paul says the weapons of spiritual warfare aren’t carnal but are mighty through God. Then he goes on to explain how to use these weapons to live victoriously. First, make the Lord Jesus Christ master of your thoughts. Cast down every thought that isn’t pure. Cast down every motive that wants its own way instead of God’s.
How do you think about the things you ought to think about? And what do you do about the thoughts that come unbidden to your mind? Every psychologist knows and will quickly tell you that if you try to repress or bury a thought, you will only drive it into your unconscious mind, there to remain until it pops out under some other guise to embarrass you again. So if repressing sinful thoughts isn’t the answer, what is? Give them to Jesus. Confess them to Him and substitute for them His blessed Word. Two things. Pray about your thoughts and give them to Jesus.
Fill your mind with Scripture and you won’t have room for garbage. “I thought on my ways,” the psalmist said, “and turned my feet unto Thy testimonies.” Bring every thought into obedience to Christ and you’ll win the war.
