Hungry For God

Matthew 5:6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

Read Matthew 5:1 – 16.

Some people seem hungry for God from childhood on; other seem to lack this trait entirely—a strange and baffling fact. Capacity for spiritual things often seems to be inherited, much as color of hair and eyes. Seem, I say, because every so often the facts of the Christian life knock out this theory. The truth of the matter is that when Jesus Christ becomes Lord of your life and Savior of your soul, He implants within you a new nature—a nature which is always hungry for God! “As newborn babes,” Peter said, “desire the sincere milk of the Word, that ye may grow thereby” (1 Peter 2:2). Jeremiah exclaimed, “Thy words were found and I did eat them, and Thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of my heart” (Jer. 15:16). Jesus told His disciples, “These things have I spoken unto you, that My joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full” (John 16:24).

“Hunger,” said our Lord, “and thirst.” This brings us to the thought that the God-thirst of our hearts is satisfied only by the indwelling Holy Spirit. Our Lord said, “If any man thirst, let him come unto Me, and drink.’ This spake He of the Spirit, which they that believe on Him should receive” (John 7:37-39). Here, then, is the answer to the hunger and thirst of that new nature that God has given us: our hunger is satisfied by the Word of God and our thirst is assuaged by the Holy Spirit as He fills every room in our “heart-house.”

Small thought here. If you are hungry for God, you will not be disappointed. “Draw nigh to God,” said James, “and He will draw nigh unto you” (James 4:8).
