I was a pastor for eighteen years. During that time I made about three calls a day, a thousand calls a year—talking to people about the Lord, calling on the sick, counseling those in trouble and in sorrow. Of them all, I think my saddest conversations were with people who were self-deceived and rejected the truth. I called on a lady, for instance, whom I knew was dying of a terminal malignancy. But she had convinced herself that nothing was wrong. Time after time, I called on this dear lady. Oh, yes, she was getting better; she just knew it. And then one day we buried her. Well, you say, she was just keeping up a brave front. No, I’ve met people who were keeping up a brave front. I know the difference. This dear woman had rejected what the doctor had told her and made up her mind what she thought was the truth, and that was that. Perhaps it was easier for her that way. But when it comes to the truth of God, my friend, it’s a pitiful thing to see people who are deluded because they will not accept it.
On the other side of the ledger, life’s greatest consummation is to receive Christ and to realize that He has chosen us from the very beginning, and that He will comfort our hearts and establish us in every good word and work.
