Read Ephesians 5:15-21. V19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord.
Speaking to yourselves has to do with Christian fellowship. You cannot be a recluse and an effective witness for God at the same time. Granted, some of us are solitary by nature. We do not mix easily with a crowd. Others of us are gregarious, happy to be in the center of bustling human activity. Yes, human beings differ in their reactions to others, and there is no point attempting to be something you’re not. But, my friend, you and I, no matter what our personalities, need each other. There is something you can say or do in your quietness or in your enthusiastic outreach that is capable of making me a better person.
We need to get together as Christians, not simply because we like each other and enjoy companionship, though that may very well be true and ought to be. We also need to join our hearts for the purpose of sharing the things of God and thus strengthening each other in the faith.
How is this done? The apostle suggests several means: psalms, hymns, spiritual songs, and the singing heart. So there you have the formula: Psalms, the Word of God. Hymns, a worshipful expression of praise to God in music. Spiritual songs, what we might call Gospel music. Heart melody, praise offered by those of us who cannot carry a tune.
