Read Ephesians 6:18-24. 6:20: For which I am an ambassador in bonds: that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.
Suppose that Angela Benson (or someone you know) is sitting at a big mahogany desk across from the personnel director of the XYZ Company. Her children are grown and gone from home and she yearns now to reenter the job market. The company official looks carefully at her application. Finally he says, “This is a very good report, Mrs. Benson, but where have you worked the past twenty-five years?” “Oh,” Angela replies, “I’ve been at home. Just a housewife.” Yet this woman may have, with the cooperation of her husband, reared sons who are now launched on their own careers. As the boys were growing up she may have been active in the community and been a source of strength and help to her church. But today she sees herself as “just a housewife.” Did she get the job? We don’t know. Usually other people see us the same way we see ourselves. What is infinitely more important than the outcome of this imagined incident is how you and I, as believers in the Lord Jesus Christ, envision ourselves. We are highly placed in God’s economy. We ought to delight in this fact and express it to others. The Apostle Paul held such a perspective. Here he was, languishing in a cold, foul-smelling Roman prison, handcuffed to cruel guards, his ministry aborted, his missionary travels ended. He could very well have moaned, “I’m nothing any more. Just a prisoner.” Instead, we can hear him proudly proclaiming, “I am an ambassador in bonds” (Eph. 6:20), a representative of the King of kings and Lord of lords. Do you see yourself in the same blessed privilege?
We are challenged in Ephesians 6 to be men and women who pray, who care, who speak up, and who share. May our Lord help us, by His grace, to meet this challenge.
