Whether we like it or not. We should love it.
Mark 2:24 Why do they on the Sabbath Day that which is not lawful?
Read Mark 2:23-28.
The scribes and Pharisees were certainly “letter-of-the-Law” kind of people. Unfortunately, the Law became such an obsession with them that they became totally oblivious to its intent. Because the Law of Moses commanded that no work be done on the Sabbath, they accused Jesus’ disciples of harvesting grain for merely picking a few ripe ears of corn—a perfectly legal practice. Jesus did not argue this point, except to remind the scribes and Pharisees that King David, in an instance of extreme need, had dined on the showbread, something reserved exclusively for the priests. In effect, our Lord said, “The Sabbath was given to provide rest and worship for man, not to bind him with petty rules.” The entire conversation turned, however, on our Lord’s comment, “The Son of man is Lord also of the Sabbath” (Mark 2:28). It is Christ’s lordship that makes all the difference! He is Lord of forgiven sin (2:5). He is Lord of renewed strength and health (v. 11). He is Lord of a changed life (v. 14). He is Lord of fulfillment and joy (vv. 18-22). Indeed, when Jesus Christ is in total control, He puts everything in true perspective—personal, interpersonal, and religious.
Learn today the meaning of “Lord also” (v. 28). Let Jesus be Lord of your career, your education, your family, your budget, your recreation… Lord of all! When He is Lord, you can begin to experience the joy of really living (Col. 3:23), and petty, everyday burdens will never again enslave you.
