Matthew 14 records an experience Peter had with a one-sentence petition that brought quick results. You remember that as Peter began to sink (after being the only mortal in history to walk on water), he cried out, “Lord, save me!” And immediately our blessed Lord “stretched forth His hand, and caught him, and said unto him, ‘O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?’” (Matt. 14:31) Jesus’ purpose was, first, to get Peter’s faith on track. And second, it was to calm the wind and waves. Notice the order. God wants to deal with your inner tempest first. Then, if necessary, He will change your circumstances—all to conform to His own perfect purpose. Are you overwhelmed with a burden of sorrow? Are you brokenhearted over the betrayal of someone dear to you? Crushed by resentment? Out-foxed in the business jungle by somebody who has taken your job? Utterly nonplussed over what to do with aging parents when neither they nor you have adequate financial or emotional resources? Pray!
When the sorrows of life sweep over your spirit and threaten to engulf you, when the results of your own foolish rebellion catch up with you, don’t give up on God! And don’t give up on yourself either.
