Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. 6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
Yesterday we looked at some causes of procrastination. Today I want to suggest some cures:
• Recognize procrastination as a sin, and repent of it. James said, ‘To him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin’ (James 4:17). Pray specifically and in faith for deliverance from your tendency to put things off.
• Spend enough time with your Lord to get a clear sense of His direction. You will save yourself many wasted hours and steps if you spend more time waiting at ‘headquarters’ until you get your marching orders for the day.
• List the things that need to be done and prioritize the list.
• Start with the most important item on your list. You’ll find that it is also the most difficult. If you can’t get started, say to yourself, ‘If I were going to start on this, what would I say or do?’ Then follow through on those ideas, and presto, you’ve done it!
• Set deadlines for yourself. Make a challenge of bettering your own time for any given task. Ask yourself, ‘Which do I enjoy more: dawdling, or the satisfaction of accomplishment?’
• Make a habit of conscious dependence on the Holy Spirit. Pray your way through every task. ‘The Lord shall guide thee continually’ (Isa. 58:11).
• Make a lifetime habit of immediate obedience to what you know is God’s will at any given moment. Too often, what we label as procrastination is just plain disobedience.
Small thought here. Wait on God, dear friend, until you know His will. Place the most important element of His will at the top of your list and then get at it!
