Judges 4:4 And Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lapidoth, she judged Israel at that time. 5 And she dwelt under the palm tree of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in mount Ephraim: and the children of Israel came up to her for judgment.
At a time when there is increasing emphasis and concern for women’s rights, these chapters will be of special interest to many. God is always willing to give you all the leadership you can stand, whether you are a man or a woman. In Christ there are no such things as men’s or women’s rights. The Apostle Paul wrote there is neither male nor female, bond nor free, Jew nor Greek, but that we are all one in our blessed Lord (Gal. 3:28). Now when it comes to leadership in the church, there is a place for women and a place for men. And when it comes to leadership in the home, there is a place for the husband as head and a place for the wife as helpmeet, the one who sets the family’s heartbeat. But when it comes to being an influence for God, ladies, your opportunities are unsurpassed. Your lives can count for God.
On another matter, Barak was instrumental in Israel’s victory over the Canaanites, but he missed all that could have been his because of unbelief. Deborah had told him God would deliver Sisera, the enemy commander, into his hand and he would experience a great victory. But Barak told Deborah that he wouldn’t go without her, he needed her for insurance, so to speak. God didn’t say to Barak, “Take Deborah with you.” He simply told Barak to go against Sisera.
Always be sure you are allowing God’s direction in your life and not simply your own inclinations or desires. Barak was in on the victory, yes, but he missed out on some of the glory by not heeding the voice of the Lord. Seize the moment, follow God’s directive, and enjoy the best He has for you.
